Pan Ditch

A wide shallow ditch is a much better choice for reducing the velocity of the drain water. It is easier to build than a deep V-ditch and does not take up any more room than a deep V-ditch. Field equipment can turn in the shallow ditch. Make the ditch the width of your grader blade and grade it as flat as possible so the water flowing in it is the same depth from one side to the other. A Wide Drain Box draining a Pan Ditch can do more to reduce silt leaving your field than any other combinations of BMPs.
